Sailing 11-26-05

This panorama stretches from San Francisco to Alameda.

San Francisco with Mount Tamelpais, Angel Island, Yerba Buena Island, and the Bay Bridge.

Nice light at Sierra Point marina in Brisbane.

A nice looking Pilot House near South Beach Harbor. She is under power, but looks to have enough sail to actually sail, unlike motor-sailors.

The foot of Powell Street, just beyond where the cable cars turn around.

John's Grill, on O'Farrel Street, a San Francisco institution that dates to the Humphry Bogart and Maltese Falcon days.

The Saga of Jeff and Red #2

When we sail as a group, we often hold the helmsman responsible for our progress, with admonitions to 'Sail Faster', regardless of conditions outside of the control of that person. In this case due to light winds and a strong adverse current, Jeff just could not get away from the mark in the background, which is a channel marker in San Francisco Bay. The marks' designation is R2 Fl 6s, which means Red #2 Flashing 6 seconds, the sounds and lights making it identifiable at night or in a fog. Sail faster Jeff!

Inspecting the mark.

Signify the marker.

Content with circumstances.

Are you still there?

The Yacht Kathleen

Kathleen demonstrates her sophisticated autopilot, or superior sailing characteristics.

Even with the reef in the main, Kathleen almost makes hullspeed, as signified by the wake being almost the length of the waterline.

The reefed mainsail aboard Kathleen.

Kathleen heads towards Alcatraz, on starboard tack.

Racing Boats

Pre-start maneuvering for a Golden Gate Yacht Club race.

Two boats range the starting line for a Golden Gate Yacht club race.

Two Rolex Cup racers in close quarters.

Genuine Risk tacks up to the Golden Gate.

A German entry in the Rolex Cup tacks into the current and wind past Alcatraz.

Moneypenny moves her portable ballast after tacking.

Hey guy's, can I squeeze through here?

It just looks like there are several collisions about to happen.

The two boats to the left are on Starboard tack, and therefore have the right of way.

One come in, one goes out. The current and wind are moving from left to right at this moment, and the Golden Gate is to the left.

These two boats are on opposite tacks, but not for long.

This is part of the South Beach Yacht Club Race Committee anticipating the Beer Can racers coming to the finish line off the fishing pier at South Beach Harbor.

Get ready, hear they come.

Ok, let's practice.
